Behind the scenes of a newborn photoshoot

Walk through a newborn photoshoot with me

Imagine sitting at your favourite restaurant on a beautiful summer evening.

It’s the first time in months you have time to unwind and relax, sipping your favourite wine, sitting next to your favourite person.

The lights, the atmosphere, the food, everything is perfect, except… the table next to you won’t stop talking.

Loudly.

VERY loudly. They are so loud that are making it almost impossible for you to have a normal conversation, or even hear your thoughts.

You’re trying to talk, but all you can hear is them.

Now you’re probably wondering what’s that got to do with a newborn photoshoot but when it comes to photographing babies, it’s tempting for a photographer to become that loud, distracting voice that ruins your magic moment.

Lots of fancy props, outfits, headbands, flowers, colourful extras… it’s almost like giving a chef an unlimited selection of ingredients.

The truth?

Your perfect, beautiful, brand new baby needs none of it.

Because in 30, 40 years, when you look back at the photographs we have created together, what’s going to still take your breath away is the sight of those little fingers and the memory of how tiny they felt – and looked – the first time you held them..

The same way an amazing dish would not make up for a terrible atmosphere at a restaurant or a loud “company”, beautiful photographs are only part of what makes a newborn session memorable.

Yes, I want to give you images that you will love forever, but I believe you’ll love them all the more if you enjoyed your time in the studio, and the photos capture the essence of your family and baby in a natural, beautiful, wholesome way.

The focus of your newborn session will be the moment, allowing things to unfold naturally because each baby and family is different, so you can be sure that your photos will be unique to you.

Before the session

The key for me with any type of session is preparation: I want everyone going in feeling as confident and relaxed as possible.

When you are ready to book your photoshoot, we will also schedule your pre-session consultation.

By speaking in person, either at the studio or via video call we will have the chance to meet, discuss the details of your session, and get to know each other a little so you can feel completely at home when you come to the studio.

Colours, Textures and materials: styling your newborn photoshoot

The aim of our work in the studio is capturing pureness, innocence, and the simple perfection of your baby.

In my experience, when it comes to such a tiny, delicate creature, simplicity, attention to detail and inclusion of soft textures work just beautifully – and this is why most of my sessions are done with a neutral palette of white, cream, grey, taupe etc.

But that doesn’t mean there is no space for variety or to personalise your images: ahead of your photoshoot we will schedule a pre-session consultation, to will discuss your preferences for colours and styling.

A newborn photoshoot captures the memory of how tiny they felt – and looked – the first time you held them.

Let the magic begin

Photographing your baby during the first few weeks of their life is perfect for this more natural approach, as they instinctively settle in those beautiful, curly poses we all love.

This also mean that your photoshoot will always be 100% baby-led and how they unfold depends a lot on baby that day.

I will never try to force us to work on a set list of shots or poses, but I have a few things I do in most sessions because I find they work well and keep the process simple and easy for everyone.

If still asleep from the car journey, we will gently place your baby on the beanbag for a few natural shots. Don’t worry if your baby starts to wake up and needs a feed.  We have plenty of time!  You can totally relax, taking as long as you need to tend to your baby’s needs.

Often, I incorporate this time into a session: pictures of you and your partner holding, comforting an even feeding your baby can capture the sweetest of moments.

The mantra for every session has to be ‘go with the flow’.

I love ‘awake’ shots and not all babies sleep during their session.

Parents, siblings… family!

You and your family are your newborn baby’s entire world.

The memories of the very first days of welcoming the new addition to the fold are incredibly special and family and siblings’ images, if included in your session, are a beautiful way of documenting this incredible bond.

And of course, we don’t want your family photos to be an overly posed, overly photoshopped beauty exercise: we will capture the moment in a natural, relaxed way. My priority is to make you forget I am even there with you… and holding a camera in my hands!

The end… not quite!

After your session, I will carefully select the best photographs and edit them to create a final gallery of gorgeous images.

Approximately 2 weeks after your session, I will send you a private online preview gallery. Here, you will view your final images, choose your collection and see printing, framing and other options for a truly custom experience.

From materials to colours, the range of wall products and prints I offer was carefully selected to match the feel and style of your photographs.
