David contacted me early one morning on the phone, saying he and his wife of 60 years had been gifted an afternoon tea at The Driftwood Hotel on the Roseland Peninsula for their wedding anniversary, and were wondering if they could book a last minute photoshoot on the beach while they were there.

It had been their favourite ‘secret’ beach for many years - where they’d taken their children when they were small, and where they had many happy memories. They were coming from Truro, and it was rare for them to come out to the Roseland so it was a spur-of-the-moment idea to book a photographer. Brilliant!

After a brief chat and me just checking I could get childcare sorted, we agreed to meet at 6pm the next day, confirmed with a contract & invoice, and that was that.

The weather was pretty good - mild and dry. The walk down to the beach by the Driftwood Hotel is quite steep, but beautiful views! David & Joan were already down there, waiting for me by the rocks.

Naturally as soon as I took out my camera, there were some nerves and the best thing to do really is keep chatting and not focusing too much on the photos. The light was beautiful and I wanted to capture as much of their spot as I could, as well as the two of them looking natural and relaxed.

We took a little stroll along the shoreline and then I asked them if they’d sit on the wooden steps that lead down onto the beach. We had plenty of laughs and they had many stories to tell. I love to spend time with seniors and could listen to the tales from their lives all day.

Once we’d taken enough photographs, I said my goodbyes and headed back up the hill. I’d gone up the wrong way so was soon passing them again as I headed up the right path this time, saying goodbye again!

We met back at the studio a few weeks later and they adored the photos. They ordered a desk top frame too as an 8x12” and it was a pleasure to surprise them with a hand delivery to their home when it arrived.
