Newborn photoshoot with Bodhi the Cockapoo | Cornwall newborn photo studio

Babies and animals - Evelyn’s newborn photoshoot with her fur brother

I’m not often asked to include dogs in a newborn photoshoot at my studio in Truro, but when I am. the answer is always yes!

It’s not unusual to have dogs coming along to outdoor Cornwall family and maternity sessions, but It’s not as common for people to have a pooch who could handle a newborn session in the studio.

When Lisa & Mike got in touch to enquire about including their Cockapoo at their baby’s newborn session, of course I was going to say yes!

I love getting to do something a little different. I know people often say never work with children or animals (and sometimes working with both does feel a bit crazy!), but Bodhi was such a good boy throughout the session. He had water, and some treats, and sat so well while we worked with Evelyn. When it was his turn, we just had a few of the treats strategically placed and tried a few variations of shots including him. I love the photos of him with Mike & Evelyn in front of the window!

Having a dog along at a newborn shoot is a lot like having a toddler present. They don’t have a clue what’s going on and it’s a matter of trying things to get a shot. Lots of treats and quick cuddles (and missed shots!). But being patient and giving them a chance is worth it for getting the shots that include them. These memories are forever and it’s so special to have them included in the newborn and family portraits.

It’s wonderful for babies to grow up with pets and I love capturing the beginning of such a beautiful relationship. Evelyn was as good as gold too, and I know she has lots of back up between Bodhi and the two cats at home, who apparently love guarding her whenever she’s put down. Awwww.

If you have a baby on the way and are wondering whether you could have your dog included in their newborn session in my Truro studio, feel free to get in touch. I’m happy to help you figure out if it would be a good option.
