Photoshoot before baby boy undergoes heart surgery

Thomas was 10 months old when he came to see me.  He was born with a congenital heart problem, and his parents wanted to have the photo shoot before he went for the heart operation to fix it.  They'd been given a gift voucher when he was born and had saved it for this time - I think to capture him before...  His mum particularly wanted some bare chested images, knowing there would be a scar after his operation. What a huge, scary challenge which I have no doubt comes after many other heartwrenching moments for his parents. 

We all want our babies to be perfect and whole, healthy and well and to keep them safe from risk and danger.  Nothing is fiercer than the protectiveness we feel for them - I can't bear the thought of having such a huge operation looming in the future of either of my children. 

We managed to squeeze the session in a week before they were due to travel up to the hospital in Bristol, and it was an honour and true pleasure meeting this strong little man.  He was so sweet and gorgeous, and we had so much fun. 

I kept it natural and relaxed, using the bed for most of the session and making sure we got some shots of his beautiful bare chest (special request from his mum). 

A few weeks later I was so happy to hear that his surgery went really well and he's making a good recovery :)
