Newborn session that brought it all back to me

I was delighted to meet little Robin and his parents in my home studio in Tregony for a newborn session. These guys were amazing.  Robin at just 10 days old was incredibly alert and although he took a while to go to sleep, I felt completely besotted by the way he gazed up at everyone.  He spent a good deal of the session awake but calm, and would just stare into his parents' eyes.  When he did the same to me while I wrapped him he won my heart!  And not only that, he was literally turning his head right around to look at the camera - what a star! 

Having a baby - sounds so simple.  I remember before having babies was on the horizon for me, 'having a baby' didn't have any huge implications, apart from the obvious (that you'd then 'have' a baby!).  I think I was still pretty clueless and naive even when I was pregnant.  I had absolutely no idea what an enormous, perception-shifting, life-altering, monumentally massive thing it was.  Labour on it's own was an eye opener!  Nothing went even remotely as I'd expected or hoped, but that's a different story.  Life with a newborn was so surreal, exhausting, incredible, life-affirming, freeing and hard.  But even though time seemed to warp and slow, we soon had a 6 week old, then a 6 month old, and so on.  Those early days fade from memory, soon becoming hazy and quickly overtaken by all that happens from there.  With babies there is always so much going on, they are ever-changing and sometimes it is hard to remember them before they could sit or roll over, or laugh at you etc.  

I do like a trip down memory lane sometimes, and it often happens with newborn sessions that some of it comes flooding back.  I love to connect with those who come to me for photos.  I find it helps to feel what I imagine they feel, and put myself in their shoes so I can get a sense of how best to serve them.  With these guys I really went right back to those first few weeks and all the tenderness, love, awe and fragility of that time.

It was a pleasure to meet and photograph this wonderful new family and I'm sure you'll agree that Robin is simply adorable.
