The perfect age for newborn photos | Cornwall baby photographer
What age is best for newborn photos?
When researching a newborn photo shoot, inevitably you’ll find information about when you should have these photos taken. You might notice photographers advising that these sessions should happen before your baby is 14 days old. The two week mark is the general rule of thumb in the industry. Some photographers are quite strict about this, but most are flexible. I usually advise my clients to aim to come in sometime between day 6-10 if possible, but if it’s later I don’t mind at all.
Why two weeks?
Firstly, this is the period in which your baby’s features are going to look the most ‘newborn’. At around 14 days there is often a growth spurt, and you’ll begin to notice your baby’s face starting to change as he or she grows and begins to fill out. Yes, it does happen that quickly, ask any new parent.
Secondly, those first two weeks are when they spend most of their lives in a deep sleep, and are still comfortable curled up as they were in the womb. Most newborn photographers are aiming to take photos of your baby peacefully asleep, often posed curled up, so this is an important factor. After 2 weeks, babies may already be more alert and wakeful, and take longer to fall into that dreamy milk coma we so love.
What if I’m too late?
If you’ve missed the hallowed two week window, don’t worry! You can still get some gorgeous photos of your baby. Discuss it with your photographer.
I tend to class any infant under 6 weeks old as newborn. It can be more challenging to work with older newborns, but certainly not impossible.
When should I book my newborn session?
If you are planning on having newborn photos taken, I would urge you to reach out to your photographer way before your due date to make sure you can get a slot.
If you’re interested in a newborn photography session with me in Cornwall, book while you’re pregnant and I’ll note your due date so that I can keep my schedule flexible around that time. My availability is limited so avoid disappointment and get in there as soon as you can.
You can reach me by filling out the contact form, and I’ll get back to you as soon as possible.
